In an interview with David Speers of Sky News the CEO of News Corporation, Rupert Murdoch explains how he sees the landscape of news media changing as well as how he plans to stop it.
Unhappy with independent journalism, the internet, blogging, and free things in general, Murdoch plans on moving all of his content to the pay model to block out “the freeloaders”. He also will be giving a big middle finger to Google saying that he intends to block all search engines from finding News Corp content, because they are not profitable to him.
In Google We Trust
This old man is clearly out of touch with reality. Internet organizations CANNOT survive without our search partners and people are not going to pay money for things that thousands of people will provide for free.
From advertiser’s perspective people who are looking for something (I.E. searching) are 100 times more likely to buy things, browse , and visit advertisers, than people who come to your website (and are already paying to be there). Without the power of search then the majority of websites would be dead in the water.
Independent news companies are coming out of the woodworks creating a vast network of online journalists that provide their content for free and cover expenses via advertisers. If Murdoch really intends on hiding all of his content behind a paywall then he is in fact committing suicide.
For most people the majority of information that is digested on a day to day basis comes from small independent blogs who do not even make mention any New Corp’s intellectual property. Today more content is user generated than ever before. Which leaves the question, “Do we even need the Main Stream Media” anymore.
Within 5 years no one will even remember the name Rupert Murdoch. Google is the entire collected knowledge of the human species to date. Hundreds of thousands of people are working together to create increasingly professional level content. What will happen to his empire when someone queries Google and instead of the Fox news article being first, The Liberty Guardian shows up at the top.
So I would like thank Mr. Murdoch from the bottom of my heart, for stepping down and allowing new collective media to blossom. You had a good run, but your time has come. Goodbye and R.I.P News Corp.
