NEW YORK (CBS) ― Former news anchor Tom Brokaw and his wife were involved in an accident in New York on Friday afternoon, but neither was injured in the crash that left one person dead and another injured.
Chopper 2HD was over the scene on the Bruckner Expressway near Sheridan Ave. around 1 p.m. when the accident happened. Officials said a woman’s SUV hit a postal service truck in the eastbound lanes, then flipped over.
The woman was thrown from the vehicle and landed on the ground below the highway, where she was pronounced dead. The postal truck driver was pushed onto the concrete divider, and was then rushed to the hospital in serious condition.
The Brokaws were driving in the lane that the postal truck drove into, and wound up striking the truck.
According to a statement issued by a Brokaw spokesperson: “As the mail truck careened into the Brokaw lane, Tom hit the brakes hard and skidded along the median. When the mail truck catapulted the median the Brokaw vehicle slid into it. Neither Tom nor Meredith were injured but tragically the driver of the SUV was thrown from her vehicle and killed. Tom and Meredith are greatly saddened by this loss of life.”
Lanes remained closed throughout the afternoon, and were reopened around 5 p.m. Residual delays continued, however, along the Bruckner and other highways in the Bronx.
